Nicholas Durlacher, CBE


After attending Stowe School, Nick Durlacher (born 1946) graduated in 1967 with a BA Honours Degree in Economics from Magdalene College, Cambridge.

He then joined the stock jobbing firm of Wedd Durlacher Mordaunt & Co. He was elected a Member of the Stock Exchange in 1971 and became a partner of the firm in 1972. Until 1982 he worked in the Gilt market in “shorts”. In 1982, with the formation of the London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange (LIFFE), he became Managing Director of Wedd Durlacher Mordaunt Futures, which subsequently became in 1986, part of BZW where he is presently a director.

In 1984 he was elected to the Board of LIFFE and served as Deputy Chairman from 1988-1992. He was elected Chairman of LIFFE in June 1992, a post that he held until June 1995. Besides various committee work Mr. Durlacher also chaired LIFFE Benefit - the exchanges charity body, and serves as a trustee at the British Brain and Spine Foundation.

In 1986 Mr. Durlacher was elected a director of the Association of Futures Brokers and Dealers (AFBD) and in 1991 continued this role at the Securities and Futures Authority (SFA), where he also serves on the Finance and Executive Committees. He was appointed Chairman of the SFA in 1995 and has been a member of the Takeover Panel since 1995. In 1992 he was appointed a director of the Investors Compensation Scheme. In June 1995 he received a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

He is married with one son, a student at Edinburgh University.
