Minister Jacques de Watteville


Jacques de Watteville has been Head of the Economic and Financial Affairs Division of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs since January 1997. The Division is responsible for the Department’s economic affairs, for dealing with international questions related to Switzerland as a financial center, and for negotiations in the field of financial services.

From 1992-1996, Mr. de Watteville served as Economic Councillor at the Swiss Embassy in London, where he was responsible for economic, financial, commercial and European integration matters.

From 1988-1992, he served as Councilor at the Swiss Mission to the EC in Brussels, where he was in charge of political questions and of the TRANSIT (land transport) negotiations. He participated in the European Economic Area negotiations as "coordinator" at the Mission and followed the enlargement issue with particular reference to Switzerland. He was also in charge of press relations.

From 1987-1988, he was based in Bern as Private Secretary of the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Mr. de Watteville joined the diplomatic service in 1982. He served at the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in Bern (1982-1983), the Swiss Embassy in Vienna (1983-1984) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Directorate of International Organisations, Bern (1984-1986), with a short posting in New York in autumn 1985 (Swiss Mission to the United Nations).

From 1979-1981, he worked for a law firm in Lausanne and, from 1978-1979, was a delegate of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Lebanon.

Mr. de Watteville has a doctorate in law and is an economics graduate. He studied at Lausanne University (Brevet d’avocat, 1981: Doctorat en droit, 1978; Licence en droit, 1973; Licence en sciences économiques, HEC, 1976).
