Mark joined the Stock Exchange in 1985 to co-ordinate the implementation of market and system changes for Big Bang. He designed and organised the dress rehearsal for the new equity market and ran the Exchange’s communications centre on the day of the Big Bang. In 1990 he took over responsibility for the Exchange’s Indices and transformed it from a loss making operational unit into a successful profit centre, initiating and implementing a very successful commercial approach to managing indices. He conceived and created the very successful FTSE Actuaries Share Indices, modernising indices and industry classifications in the UK. He was the architect of FTSE International, creating the company in September 1995. He has spoken on the subject of design and management of indices throughout Europe, Hong Kong and America. He qualified as a Chartered Secretary in 1984.
