Michael Jenkins was educated at Tonbridge School and Merton College, Oxford, where he read Law. After a period working for Shell he joined IBM in 1962 specialising in airline systems. After five years with IBM he joined Robson Morrow & Co., a firm of management consultants, and was principally concerned with developing client services in the financial services field. He was made a partner in 1969. In 1971 he was appointed Technical Director of the London Stock Exchange, responsible for the development of new systems for members - specifically market information systems and a new system for settlement - called TALISMAN. In 1977 he was invited by the Council for the European Options Exchange to set up the Clearing House for the Exchange. Following the opening of the EOE in April 1978 he was appointed joint Managing Director of the Exchange responsible for its day-to-day operations. In June 1981 he was recruited as Chief Executive to set up the newly-formed London International Financial Futures Exchange (LIFFE). He continued as Chief Executive until his retirement at the end of 1992. In May 1992 he was elected non-Executive Chairman of the London Commodity Exchange, a position he held until the Exchange's merger with LIFFE in September 1996. Michael Jenkins is Chairman of the London Clearing House Limited and also of the Futures & Options Association (FOA). He is also a Director of the Tradepoint Investment Exchange, the Swiss Commodities and Futures Association, a member of the Financial Law Panel and a Governor of Sevenoaks School.
