Leslie V. Hosking


Les Hosking has been involved in the futures industry for most of his working life. He began his career in 1966 as a wool futures floor trader employed by J. W. McGregor, a founder Floor Member of the Sydney Greasy Wool Futures Exchange.

In 1969 he began a ten year association with the Japanese multinational Itochu as their futures trader and client advisor and from 1974 Manager of the Itochu futures operations in Australia.

In 1979 he was appointed Divisional Manager Clearing Services at International Commodities Clearing House, Australia, which was then the Clearing House for the Sydney Futures Exchange. In 1984 he was based in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur as ICCH’s Regional Representative in Asia.

On 2 January 1985 he took up his current position as Chief Executive and Director of Sydney Futures Exchange. He is also a Director of SFE’s two wholly owned subsidiaries, Sydney Futures Exchange Clearing House and New Zealand Futures and Options Exchange.

SFE was recently ranked as the largest financial futures exchange in the Asia-Pacific ahead of equivalent exchanges in Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong and is eleventh largest futures exchange in the world.

In October 1996 Mr Hosking was nominated by the NSW Government as a Board member of NEMMCO, the newly formed National Electricity Market Management Company. This appointment was renewed for a further three years in October 1997.

In March 1998, the Federal Treasurer appointed Mr Hosking as a member of the Australian Government’s newly formed Financial Sector Advisory Council. The Council is a non-statutory peak advisory body that will play a vital role in advising the Government on policies to ensure Australia has an efficient, competitive and dynamic financial sector.

At the same time, the Treasurer also appointed Mr Hosking as the Chairman of the Finance Sector Advisory Council Task Force on Australia as a Regional Financial Centre. The Task Force is a sub-committee of the FSAC advising on policies to ensure Australia can realise potential as a key financial centre.
