Gary King

Gary King’s extensive work experience comprises more than 25 years in the energy and financial sectors. Gary began his international career in the oil industry as a petroleum exploration geologist, and held a number of managerial positions in oil exploration and oil trading with Neste Oy, the National Oil and Energy company of Finland. Gary moved into the financial sector in 1994 when he joined Morgan Stanley as a Vice-President and oil trader on their commodities desk in Singapore.

Gary returned to Dubai in 1999 as General Manager Risk Management and advisor to the Group CEO of Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC). During this period, Gary was also seconded to Dragon Oil plc where he was Managing Director of Dragon’s oil trading subsidiary and responsible for negotiating and managing the innovative Caspian crude oil swap agreement between Turkmenistan and Iran.

Gary returned to the investment banking sector in 2001 when he joined Standard Bank’s Dubai office to initiate their regional energy practice, where he pioneered the private equity GCC Energy Fund, the first fund to be established in the GCC to invest exclusively in the energy sector, and which was one of the first companies to be incorporated and licensed within the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC).

Prior to accepting his position as CEO of the Dubai Mercantile Exchange Limited (DME) in December 2005, Gary was a Senior Vice President in Macquarie Bank’s Treasury and Commodities joint venture with Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Gary is a graduate of the University of London with a BSc. in petroleum exploration geology and a MSc. D.I.C. in Petroleum Exploration Geology from London University, Imperial College, Royal School of Mines.
