Gary DeWaal is the Fimat Group’s Global General Counsel and Director of Legal and Compliance, as well as Senior Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Fimat USA, LLC. (Fimat USA is a broker dealer and futures commission merchant registered with the SEC and CFTC, respectively; the Fimat Group is part of the Societe Generale Group of companies). Gary is also Group Chief Ethics Officer and a member of the 7-member global Executive Committee of the Fimat Group. Gary joined Fimat in March 1995 from Brody White & Company where he served, at various times, as President, General Counsel, Head of Operations and Head of Internal Audit since 1986. Previously Gary worked for the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s Division of Enforcement in NYC, and Mudge Rose Guthrie & Alexander, a Wall Street corporate law firm whose principal partner was once Richard Nixon. Gary graduated in 1980 with JD and MBA degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo and in 1976 from the State University of New York at Stony Brook where he received a BA degree in English and economics; was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Epsilon; and co-received awards as the University’s top overall graduating senior and junior. Gary frequently speaks at industry events sponsored by the Futures Industry Association (FIA) and Securities Industry Association, and the Bar Association of the City of New York, and has conducted training classes for the CFTC, CSRC, SEC and NASD. He has also served for over 10 years as a Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School, a member of the Law and Compliance Executive Committee of the FIA (he is a past president of this organization), and a member of the New York Mercantile Exchange’s Business Conduct Committee. Gary represents the Fimat Group on Societe Generale’s global Legal and Compliance steering committees. Gary frequently writes on issues involving financial services. On 18 May 2005, Gary published an article in The Financial Times entitled “US Must Create a Single Financial Regulator, and on 2 August 2005 in the Washington Times entitled “Streamlining Regulation.” Gary lives in Brooklyn, New York with his wife, Myrna Chao, and two daughters, Justi and Nyasia. In his spare time, Gary is an avid photographer and amateur chef.
