Clive Furness

Clive is widely recognised as one of Europe’s leading commodity specialists. He is Managing Director of Contango Markets Ltd, a strategic business development consultancy specialising in commodities, derivatives, clearing and technology markets for a broad customer base that includes investment banks, exchanges, clearing houses, utilities and technology companies.

In September 1999, he was a co-founder of Comdaq Ltd, an internet physical commodity exchange, where he was responsible for writing the functional specifications for, and launching, four of Comdaq’s fifteen markets. He also undertook all of Comdaq’s marketing and press activity, and advised on the trading and development of Comdaq’s 15 product lines.

Between 1993 and 1999 Clive was a senior executive at LIFFE/LCE, where he held the posts of Director of Business Development (LCE), Director - Commodity Products and Market Development and Communications Director. As Director – Account Management, he initiated, promoted and implemented a sea change in LIFFE’s customer relationship management by establishing the Account Management team that now handles all of the trading relationships for the exchange.

Prior to this Clive was a successful coffee trader for 14 years – first as a floor trader with GNI and then running futures and physical books for the J.Aron Coffee division of Goldman Sachs International. Whilst at Goldman he was elected to the Board of the London Commodity Exchange, was chairman of the LCE options and coffee markets and was chairman of the coffee-grading panel.

Clive is a regular editorial contributor on a variety of topics to futures industry and commodity market publications, and is an accomplished and frequent speaker at major international commodity and derivatives conferences.
