The U.S. Senate confirmed James E. Newsome on December 20, 2001, to serve as Chairman for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). He was sworn in December 27, 2001, to a term expiring in June 2006. Prior to his confirmation as Chairman, he had served since 1998 as a Commissioner. Chairman Newsome encourages industry involvement; which has contributed to major regulatory modernization of U.S. futures and derivatives markets. Mr. Newsome received his B.S. degree in Food and Resource Economics from the University of Florida and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Agricultural Science/Economics from Mississippi State University.
