Dr. Richard Ward

Dr Ward joined the IPE in 1995, and since 1999 he has served as the IPE's Chief Executive Officer. He is responsible for financial performance, technology and market operations, human resources, business development and regulation and risk management. Under his tenure, the IPE successfully demutualised in 2000 with the unanimous support of its members. This paved the way for the acquisition of the IPE in 2001 by ICE.

Prior to assuming the role of Chief Executive, Dr Ward was the Executive Vice President of Business Development for the IPE. In this position he effectively established networks between the IPE Board and members and key outside parties, implemented business improvement programs, and led the design and development of the innovative gas futures market. Before joining the IPE, Dr Ward was Head of Marketing & Business Development for energy derivatives worldwide at Tradition Financial Services, a specialist OTC broking company. This was preceded by a career with BP where his last three years were spent as Business Development Manager for the International Oil Trading business. Dr Ward joined BP in 1988, initially to manage a large analytical research and development department within BP Group Research. Between 1982 and 1988, Dr Ward pursued a scientific career with the Science and Engineering Research Council, leading numerous research and development projects and publishing over 30 scientific papers.

Dr Ward serves as an Executive Director of IPE Holdings Plc, IPE of London Limited and of IPE Market Services Limited. He serves as a Non-Executive Director of the London Clearing House Limited and of the Futures and Options Association.

Dr Ward has a B.Sc. (1st Class Hons.) in Chemistry and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Exeter University.
