Dr Richard Ward was appointed Chief Executive of the IPE on 17 September 1999, following the appointment of Sir Bob Reid as Chairman in August 1999. Dr Ward joined the Exchange in March 1995 and was made Executive Vice President, Business Development in August 1996. In this capacity, he had overall responsibility for marketing existing and new products, researching and developing current and potential contracts, training, press and public relations. During this period he oversaw the successful development and launch of the IPE’s Natural Gas futures contract. Prior to joining the IPE, Dr Ward was Head of Marketing & Business Development for energy derivatives world-wide at Tradition Financial Services, a specialist OTC broking company. This was preceded by a career with BP where his last three years were spent as Business Development Manager for the International Oil Trading business. Dr Ward joined BP in 1988, initially to manage a large analytical research and development department within BP Group Research. Between 1982 and 1988, Dr Ward pursued a scientific career with the Science and Engineering Research Council, leading numerous research and development projects and publishing over 30 scientific papers. Dr Ward has a First Class Honours degree in Chemistry and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from Exeter University. He is a fellow of the RSA and a member of the Royal Institution and the Institute of Directors. Dr Ward, 44, is married with one son.
