Franz Schmid


Franz Schmid (1949) graduated as a master of business economics (lic.oec.publ.) at the University of Zurich in 1974. From 1976 to 1978 he worked as an organizational consultant at UBS and at Milchverband Winterthur (the largest Swiss dairy company). From 1978 to 1980 he was a financial analyst at Zürcher Kantonalbank. In 1981 he joined Bank Vontobel, a private bank based in Zürich. As financial analyst he was responsible for the research of Japanese and South East Asian stock-markets as well as miscellaneous Swiss mid and small cap companies. From 1987 to 1995 he worked at ELVIA Insurance company, a Swiss multiline insurer. As first vice president he was responsible for the management of ELVIA’s proprietary equity portfolios and the portfolio management of ELVIA’s pension fund. In December 1995 he joined Rentenanstalt/Swiss Life as vice president and head of portfolio management. In January 1999 he was appointed managing director of Swiss Life Hedge Fund Partners AG. This company was established in 1998 and is owned as a Joint venture by Rentenanstalt/Swiss Life (66.6%) and RMF Holding Ltd. (33.3%). The objective of Swiss Life Hedge Fund Partners is to develop sophisticated investment products for Rentenanstalt/Swiss Life and third party institutional investors.
